What's the difference?

Let's get back to basics. Is there a difference between direct mail and direct marketing?

I can give you a one-word answer: yes.

So how do they differ? Think of it this way: direct marketing is the tree and direct mail is a branch. A very sturdy base branch, mind you, but still a branch.

Direct marketing, according to the almighty Wikipedia, has two main characteristics -- and benefits -- that separate it from other marketing styles:
1. it involves sending marketing messages directly to your consumer, rather than through another medium, and
2. it utilizes a specific call-to-action that allows the sender to track responses.

On the other hand, direct mail, a branch of that tree, delivers a marketing message to the consumer specifically using the U.S. Postal Service.

The direct marketing tree includes direct mail, telemarketing, email marketing, and direct response TV advertising, all of which share those two essential characteristics. If you want your customer to act on a specific offer and within a certain time frame, a direct marketing channel is the way to go.

Still fuzzy? Call us and we'll be happy to help.
